Senior UI Designer

Overview:

San Francisco-based Bridge Design is looking for a senior UI designer. Bridge is a division of Ximedica, an ISO 13485:2003 certified and FDA-registered full-service product development firm with offices in Providence, St. Paul, San Francisco, and Hong Kong. Ximedica focuses exclusively on medical products, with over 25 years of experience developing medical devices, combination products, and consumer healthcare products. We have a close-knit, high-energy culture that fosters creativity while exceeding client expectations. We offer tremendous opportunity for professional development, rewarding projects, an excellent benefits package, and summer hours.

Bridge Design is looking for a UI designer with strong visual design and interface problem-solving skills to work on projects ranging from small mobile devices, through apps, to innovative web applications to help manage chronic disease or better present information to clinicians or scientists. As part of the small SF team, this designer will participate in the full UI design process: user research (often with clinicians or patient on-site), concept generation, prototyping, usability testing, visual design, detailed specification, and support of design implementation by coders and engineers.

We specialize in solving complex design problems related to usability, often operating inside some tough design constraints but always looking to push our client’s thinking and technology forward. Projects are often long in duration, typically 6 to 12 months, and given the depth of the products we create, tend to be very collaborative with our clients. Making things look good often comes later in the game; we iterate a lot on overall architecture, step reduction, usability, screen layouts, metaphors for icons, and we do a lot usability research. In addition to graphic design talent and problem-solving skills, we need a passion for learning new medical & scientific information, and comfort dealing with frequent iterations.

Reporting to the Director of UI/UX and working under the guidance of one or more program managers, this individual will conceptualize and execute design solutions in accordance with client and development team goals. The ideal candidate will be an innovative, creative and well organized self-starter with a focus on understanding and developing user-centered solutions. We are looking for a hands-on designer who will not only deliver compelling designs, but also lead by example. Bridge Design’s focus is on evidence-based design; we use research to inform and fuel the design team and focus on human factors and manufacturing to deliver holistic product and system solutions.

You will be responsible for representing the user to deliver thoughtful design solutions. You will be part of a cross-functional development team, considering all aspects of development to move designs through a phased gate process. You will partner with research, human factors, and engineering teams to develop products and devices from concept to production.

Requirements:

  • 5 – 7 years experience in UX/UI design
  • Bachelor’s or Master degree in a relevant field such as graphic, visual design, interaction design
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating visual problem-solving within constraints that goes beyond visual design within typical patterns
  • Proficiency in Adobe products, Sketch, InVision
  • Strong efficiency with interactive prototyping tools of choice
  • Good communication skills including clearly articulated writing, ability to speak confidently about design solutions, both during internal reviews and client presentation
  • Strong organizational, time management and prioritizing skills
  • Ability to develop robust and engaging client presentations alongside program managers and other team members

Great additions:

  • Design research experience
  • Knowledge of the medical regulatory environment and how to work within it
  • Small screen, app, and web design experience
  • Small physical prototyping skills
  • HTML, CSS, JS coding for websites, web apps, Window Apps, iOS/Android and/or other prototyping skills such as Java/android and Linux platform
